What Belongs in the Low-Voltage Scope on Your Bid

Learn which systems fall inside the low-voltage scope, where scope gaps open between subs, and how those gaps turn into change orders.

Low-voltage is rarely one line on a bid. It is usually several, split across several subs, and the space between them is where a job gets expensive.

An electrical contractor coordinating four low-voltage subs is not managing four scopes. They are managing four scopes plus every seam between them, and the seams are not on anyone's bid.

The Scope Is Wider Than Most Bids Reflect

A full low-voltage package covers more than cabling:

Structured cabling and connectivity: data cabling, fiber backbone, WiFi, intercom

Access control: badging, burglar and intrusion alarms

           Video surveillance: cameras and monitoring

Fire and life safety: fire alarm, area of refuge, ERRCS

Smart building systems: wireless door locks, lighting and thermostat control

Design and consulting: buildable design and value engineering

Split across separate subs, each of those is bid to its own drawing set. Nobody is bidding the space between them.

Gaps Open at the Seams, Not in the Middle

The systems themselves are rarely the problem. The handoffs are.

Pathway and conduit responsibility. Equipment room space and rack allocation. Power coordination for devices someone else is installing. Head-end integration between access control, surveillance, and fire. Terminations at the boundary between two subs' scopes.

Each of those sits between two bids. When neither sub owns it, it surfaces during rough-in, and by then the schedule is already tight.

The Gaps That Turn Into Change Orders

Some are minor. A few are predictable and expensive.

Fire and life safety systems carry code requirements that get discovered late, particularly ERRCS and area of refuge, which are commonly missed at bid time and difficult to add cheaply afterward.

Pathways sized before the full device count is known force either congested conduit or new pathway. Equipment space allocated for one system rarely accommodates three. Integration between systems bid separately often assumes coordination nobody scoped.

None of these are field errors. They are bid-stage omissions that surface in the field.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Submit

Which systems are in this scope, and which are excluded?

Who owns pathway, conduit, and equipment room space?

Who is responsible for integration between systems?

What has to be coordinated with other trades, and when?

What is assumed rather than drawn?

One Scope, One Point of Accountability

WireTech Idaho handles the full low-voltage scope under one roof, which removes the seams rather than managing them. One partner, one bid, one point of accountability through closeout and after.

We are brand-agnostic, so the recommendation fits the project rather than a manufacturer’s incentives. Our team includes NICET and BICSI certified staff. We prefer to be involved early, where scope gaps and design problems can be caught before they become change orders.

          Have Something Bidding?

Send plans and we will scope the full low-voltage package.

Why Fire and Life Safety Compliance Belongs on a Developer's Risk List

Learn why fire and life safety compliance affects a developer's delivery date and budget, and how code interpretation during design protects both.

A certificate of occupancy is the last gate between a finished building and revenue. Fire and life safety compliance is one of the items standing in front of it.

That is what makes compliance a developer issue rather than a contractor issue. The code obligation belongs to the design and installation team. The consequences of getting it wrong land on the schedule, the budget, and the delivery date.

Compliance Sits on the Path to Occupancy

Fire alarm plans are reviewed against state and local code by an Authority Having Jurisdiction. Approval is required before a system can be commissioned, and commissioning is required before occupancy.

Every step in that sequence is dependent on the one before it. A single unresolved item does not delay one trade. It delays turnover, and turnover is what lease-up and financing are built around.

Carrying costs continue while a submittal sits in a resubmittal queue. That is the part rarely priced into a compliance conversation.

Compliance Is Decided in Design, Not at Inspection

An inspection does not create compliance. It confirms whether decisions made months earlier were correct.

The review is based on what the drawings show: device placement, coverage, notification, circuit design, and integration with the rest of the building. Made with a clear reading of the code, review becomes a checkpoint. Made by habit or carried over from a previous project, review becomes a discovery process.

Discovery late in a build is expensive.

Two Ways It Costs a Developer

Under-designing costs schedule. It triggers redesign, resubmittal, reordered material, and re-inspection. Every one of those steps carries a queue, and none of those queues adjust to a delivery date.

Over-engineering costs budget, permanently. Devices beyond code requirement are purchased and installed once, then inspected and maintained every year the building stands. The capital budget absorbs it at the front. The operating budget absorbs it for the life of the asset.

Both trace back to the same source. When a design team is not certain how a code section will be interpreted, the safe move is to add.

For a developer, that uncertainty is the risk. Not the code itself.

Questions Worth Asking Before Design Starts

Who on your team interprets code, and what is their background?

How do you determine required coverage for this occupancy type?

What does your plan review submittal package include?

What in this design is code-required, and what is optional?

The last question matters most. A partner who can separate requirement from preference protects a budget without putting an occupancy date at risk.

Why WireTech Idaho Brought a Former State Plans Examiner In-House

Low-voltage systems touch nearly every part of a modern building. Treating them as a late-stage task introduces unnecessary risk.

Early planning creates clarity, protects schedules, and supports systems that perform as intended.

We recently appointed James Barnett as Chief Compliance Officer. Barnett spent five years as a Fire Alarm Plans Examiner for the Utah State Fire Marshal's Office, serving as the Authority Having Jurisdiction for fire alarm systems statewide.

That experience now sits on the design side of the table, where compliance decisions are actually made.

For developers, it means code questions are resolved on paper rather than in the field. For general contractors, it means fewer surprises between submittal and commissioning.

Compliance handled well at design is invisible. That is the point.

Protect the Delivery Date Before It Is at Risk

The best time to resolve a code question is before it becomes a correction notice.

Low-Voltage Is Not an Afterthought: Why Early Design Matters

Early low-voltage planning reduces rework, protects schedules, and improves system performance across modern construction projects.

Low-voltage systems are no longer simple cabling installed at the end of a project. Today, they are interconnected systems that support security, connectivity, fire and life safety, and overall building performance.

When low-voltage planning is delayed, teams are often forced to make systems fit into a building that wasn’t designed to support them — creating avoidable rework, coordination challenges, and added cost.

Modern Buildings Require Intentional Technology Planning

Access control, video surveillance, structured cabling, fiber, Wi-Fi, audio/visual, and other low-voltage systems depend on proper pathways, equipment space, power coordination, and integration with other trades.

Without early planning, these systems compete for space late in construction, increasing installation complexity and limiting long-term flexibility.

          The Real Cost of Waiting

Delaying low-voltage design affects more than technology scopes. It impacts schedules, budgets, and trades already operating on tight timelines.

Last-minute adjustments can lead to congested pathways, design compromises, and rework that could have been avoided through earlier coordination.

          Why Early Involvement Changes Outcomes

Bringing low-voltage expertise into the design phase allows technology infrastructure to be planned alongside the building itself.

WireTech works early with owners, developers, general contractors, electrical contractors, and design teams to identify infrastructure needs, coordinate across trades, and support systems that integrate cleanly into the overall build.

This approach reduces friction during construction and supports stronger system performance long after turnover.

Future-Ready Starts with the Right Foundation

Future-proofing is not about predicting every new technology. It is about creating infrastructure that can adapt.

When low-voltage systems are designed intentionally from the start, upgrades and expansions can be managed without disruptive rework — extending the value of the original investment.

          Timing Is the Advantage

Low-voltage systems touch nearly every part of a modern building. Treating them as a late-stage task introduces unnecessary risk.

Early planning creates clarity, protects schedules, and supports systems that perform as intended.

The right time to think about low-voltage is before construction begins.

People Believe the Work, Not the Words

Performance matters in construction. Discover how coordination, accountability, and brand-neutral design define WireTech’s low-voltage approach.

If you’ve ever visited our office, you’ve seen a message on the wall in bold red letters: “People may doubt what you say, but they will believe what you do.” It reflects what matters most in construction and low-voltage integration. Results matter. Reliability matters. Follow-through matters.

Anyone can describe their approach as seamless, coordinated, or efficient. But when schedules tighten, trades overlap, and turnover approaches, the conversation shifts from what was promised to what was delivered. Project teams remember who solved problems quickly, who aligned with other trades instead of working against them, and who remained accountable through completion. That is the standard we hold ourselves to on every project.

          Why Being Brand Neutral Matters

Every project is different. Goals, budgets, and performance expectations vary, and technology should reflect those differences. WireTech remains brand neutral so we can select the hardware, platforms, and systems that best align with each project’s needs. The solution follows the project — not the other way around.

Brand neutrality also supports responsible value engineering. By avoiding overbuilt scopes and coordinating closely across trades, we help eliminate unnecessary cost while reinforcing long-term performance. The priority is durability and integration — not the number of line items.

What Performance Looks Like in the Field

When low-voltage systems are designed and integrated correctly, the impact extends across the entire project. Owners protect budgets. Contractors simplify coordination by relying on a single partner across low-voltage disciplines rather than managing multiple vendors. End users experience reliable systems that function as intended from day one. Buildings benefit long term because infrastructure is designed to scale as expectations and technology evolve.

These outcomes are not driven by selecting the most recognizable brand name. They come from thoughtful engineering, disciplined coordination, and systems designed to work together — now and in the future.

          What Clients Remember Most

Across markets and project types, the feedback we receive carries a consistent theme. What stands out is the execution. Clients remember clear communication during design. They remember coordination that kept construction moving. They remember responsiveness when questions arose and support that continued beyond installation. They remember that the system worked — and continued to work.

Trust is not earned by what you say. Trust is earned by what you do.

          Our Standard

Clear communication, coordination, and accountability define WireTech’s approach. It is why we are selected for complex projects and why partners choose to work with us again. Reliability is not a slogan — it is a record of performance.

Ready to work with a low-voltage partner defined by performance — not promises?

The Service Gap: Why In-House Installation and Long-Term Support Matter

Integrated low-voltage delivery reduces coordination gaps, strengthens accountability, and supports long-term system performance.

In the low-voltage and smart building space, technology decisions involve many moving parts — from early planning and budgeting to installation and long-term system performance.

WireTech’s differentiator is how those parts work together.

By bringing consulting, design, installation, and ongoing support together within one structure, WireTech helps ensure systems perform as intended throughout the life of a building.

          Where Alignment Makes the Difference

When responsibility shifts between disconnected teams, even well-designed systems can encounter challenges during installation or turnover. Miscommunication, unclear ownership, and inconsistent execution often create avoidable setbacks.

WireTech’s integrated model maintains continuity from initial planning through project completion, creating a more streamlined experience for developers, contractors, architects, and building owners.

A Design-Build Model Focused on Execution

WireTech operates as a design-build integrator, with internal teams engaged from early project phases through installation and post-completion support.

This structure keeps project intent, system design, and field execution aligned, while providing stakeholders with a clear point of accountability throughout the build process. Rather than transferring responsibility between separate groups, WireTech maintains oversight from start to finish.

          Capabilities That Deliver Long-Term Value

           Pre-Construction Planning & Design

Early collaboration helps ensure low-voltage infrastructure aligns with project requirements and long-term operational needs.

           In-House Installation

WireTech technicians are company employees, trained to consistent standards and accountable for the quality of every installation.

           System Integration & Commissioning

Systems are tested and validated before handoff to support reliable performance at turnover.

           Ongoing Service & Support

Support remains available after installation, providing continuity if needs arise over time.

          Why This Approach Matters

Low-voltage systems now function as essential building infrastructure. Their success depends not only on the technology selected, but on disciplined execution and informed support throughout the project lifecycle.

By remaining engaged beyond installation, WireTech helps promote consistent performance, efficient issue resolution, and long-term system reliability.

The True Value Is in Delivery

Strong proposals may open doors, but long-term value is created through execution.

By maintaining continuity across planning, installation, and support, WireTech provides lasting value well beyond project completion.
